What type of fire extinguishers do I need?

There are many different sizes and types of fire extinguishers and many clients have come to us not knowing what they need. We have put a brief general guide below describing the most common types and what they can be used for. When selecting fire extinguishers there are multiple factors which need to be considered. If you would like any help or advice simply fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

Water Fire Extinguishers

Water fire extinguishers are filled with plain water and are suitable for use on Class A (flammable solids) fires. These type of fires involve materials like paper, card, wood and textiles. Water extinguishers work by cooling the fire and removing heat and are a common choice for workplaces. Benefits of water extinguishers are that they are environmentally friendly and easy to clean up when used. The disadvantages are that they may freeze if left outside in cold temperatures and should not normally be specified for use on fires involving electricity.

Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam extinguishers are filled with water and a foam concentrate that produces a frothy foam spray when discharged. One benefit of foam extinguishers over water is that they can also be used on Class B (flammable liquid) fires involving liquids such as petrol, spirits, solvents and paint. Similar to water units, foam may also freeze in low temperatures and should not normally be used on fires involving electricity. The foam concentrate can also be environmentally damaging which is a consideration when choosing between foam and water extinguishing mediums. Foam extinguishers that we supply are EcoFoam models which use an environmentally friendly foam concentrate.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguishers are also suitable for use on Class B fires but in many workplaces are provided primarily for use on fires involving electrical items such as electrical appliances, distribution boards and switchgear. CO2 extinguishers work by displacing the oxygen around the fire which has a smothering effect which extinguishes the fire.

ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Powder fire extinguishers are multipurpose and can be used on Class A, Class B, Class C (flammable gases) and fires involving electricity. One major disadvantage of powder extinguishers is that they are messy and an extensive amount of time would be required to clean up after using one. Powder fire extinguishers can create a big dust cloud which reduces vision and can also irritate the lungs. For this reason they should not be specified for indoor use unless a dedicated risk assessment specifies a need for them. One benefit of powder extinguishers is that the contents will not freeze outdoors in very low temperatures unlike water and foam, for this reason they are often ideal for use on construction sites.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers

Wet Chemical fire extinguishers are normally intended for use on Class F (cooking oil fires) although they can also be used on Class A fires. Wet chemical extinguishers are normally found in commercial kitchens which use deep fat fryers When sprayed onto a cooking oil fire the wet chemical reacts with the cooking oil which undergoes a process called saponification and changes to a soap type substance which will no longer burn.

Origin?

Where are the extinguishers made? They may come from a British company but do they make them or simply import them?

Certified?

Are the extinguishers that you are going to be supplied with CE marked and Kitemarked or LPCB certified, if not why? All extinguishers that we supply have these markings and accreditations. We supply data sheets with our quotes so that you can assure yourself that you are buying a genuine, compliant fire protection device that complies with all of the relevant standards.

Hidden Charges?

Does the quote for your new fire extinguishers include delivery, installation, commissioning, signage, removal of packaging and a commissioning report? All prices that we quote include these items as standard.

Refurbished Extinguishers?

When a company quotes you for CO2 extinguishers are these brand new or old refurbished units? We do not supply cheap refurbished CO2 extinguishers that are not Kitemarked. All fire extinguishers that we supply are brand new, complete with warranty.

What is the warranty period?

If you are buying new fire extinguishers you need peace of mind that they are going to last. What warranty period is being offered? If there is no warranty or just a 1 year warranty your could quickly be out of pocket if your extinguishers end up failing an annual service. All new fire extinguishers that we supply come with a 5 year warranty as standard.
