What types of fire extinguishers do I need?

What type of fire extinguishers are needed is a frequent question when clients contact us looking for fire extinguishers for their workplace. We have put a brief general guide below describing the most common fire extinguishers and what they can be used for. Their are a multitude of different factors that need to be considered when selecting fire extinguishers, if you would like any help or advice simply give us a call and we can discuss your own particular requirements.

Water Fire Extinguishers

Water fire extinguishers are filled with plain water and are suitable for use on Class A (flammable solids) fires involving things like paper, card, wood and textiles. They work by cooling the fire and removing heat. Benefits of water extinguishers are that they are environmentally friendly and easy to clean up when used.

Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam fire extinguishers are filled with water and a foam concentrate that produces a frothy foam spray when discharged. The benefit of foam extinguishers over water extinguishers is that they can also be used on Class B (flammable liquid) fires involving petrol, solvents, paint etc. Foam fire extinguishers contain pollutants which can be environmentally damaging which is one of the downsides when compared to a plain water fire extinguisher. Foam extinguishers that we supply are EcoFoam models which contain a more environmentally friendly foam concentrate.(flammable solids) fires involving things like paper, card, wood and textiles. They work by cooling the fire and removing heat. Benefits of water extinguishers are that they are environmentally friendly and do not make a mess when used.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguishers are also suitable for use on Class B fires but in many workplaces are provided for use on fires involving electrical items such as appliances, distribution boards and switchgear. CO2 extinguishers work by displacing the oxygen around the fire which has a smothering effect which extinguishes the fire.

ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Powder fire extinguishers are multipurpose and can be used on Class A, Class B, Class C (flammable gases) and fires involving electricity. One major disadvantage of powder extinguishers is that they are messy and it would take a lot of time to clean up after using one. They can create a big dust cloud which reduces vision and can also irritate the lungs and for this reason they should not be specified for indoor use unless a dedicated risk assessment specifies a need for them. One benefit of powder extinguishers is that the contents will not freeze outdoors in very low temperatures unlike water and foam, for this reason they are often ideal for use on construction sites.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers

Wet Chemical fire extinguishers are normally intended for use on Class F (cooking oil fires) although they can also be used on Class A fires. Wet chemical extinguishers are normally found in commercial kitchens which use deep fat fryers and are sprayed onto the cooking oil if it catches fire. The wet chemical reacts with the cooking oil which undergoes a process called saponification and changes to a substance which will not burn.

Comparing Quotes

We are proud to support British manufacturing by offering high quality British made fire extinguishers. Whilst we cannot compete in terms of price with the cheap far eastern manufactured extinguishers that some companies offer we can compete and win on quality, standards and safety. When we give a quote for fire extinguishers it is likely that it will not be the cheapest quote that you get but it probably wont be the most expensive either. When comparing quotes it is worth considering if the quotes that you have been given are on an equal basis.

Origin?

Where are the extinguishers made? They may come from a British company but do they make them or simply import them?

Certified?

Are the extinguishers that you are going to be supplied with CE marked and Kitemarked or LPCB certified, if not why? All extinguishers that we supply have these markings and accreditations. We supply data sheets with our quotes so that you can assure yourself that you are buying a genuine, compliant fire protection device that complies with all of the relevant standards.

Hidden Charges?

Does the quote for your new fire extinguishers include delivery, installation, commissioning, signage, removal of packaging and a commissioning report? All prices that we quote include these items as standard.

Refurbished Extinguishers?

When a company quotes you for CO2 extinguishers are these brand new or old refurbished units? We do not supply cheap refurbished CO2 extinguishers that are not Kitemarked. All fire extinguishers that we supply are brand new, complete with warranty.

What is the warranty period?

If you are buying new fire extinguishers you need peace of mind that they are going to last. What warranty period is being offered? If there is no warranty or just a 1 year warranty your could quickly be out of pocket if your extinguishers end up failing an annual service.
